TUSIB President Mete Karaer spoke at the Turkish-Ukrainian Business Forum
The Turkish-Ukrainian Business Forum organized by DEIK (Council for Foreign Economic Relations of Turkey) with the support of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine was held in Istanbul. About 200 participants discussed investment opportunities and cooperation between Turkey and Ukraine at the Forum.
President of the Union of Industrialists and Businessmen of Turkey and Ukraine “TUSIB” Mete Karaer gave a speech at the Business Forum in Istanbul.
Mr. Karaer said that the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between our countries will have a positive effect and we expect that this agreement will affect many different areas of trade. He has highlighting that this will be one of the most important steps for making our relations closer and will contribute to the well-being of both countries.
Mete Karaer continued his speech:
“The development of logistics infrastructure in Ukraine, not only trade with Turkey, will also have a positive impact on trade with other countries. The Turkish port and railway infrastructure can be used for transportation of Ukrainian goods to the Central Asia countries. It is necessary to conduct research on these ways. ”
Concerning the problems of Turkish businessmen, Mete Karaer mentioned difficulties in the process of execution of residence permit and a work permit. He stressed the importance of simplifying bureaucratic processes and said that he believes many problems can be eliminated by strengthening mutual ties.
Mete Karaer noted the important role of Ukrainian League of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (ULIE), the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and the DEIK (Council for Foreign Economic Relations of Turkey) in the process of strengthening ties and increasing economic indicators between Ukraine and Turkey.
Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Stepan Kubiv gave a speech at the Forum in which he stressed that the foreign trade between our two countries was negatively affected by the crisis that began in 2014. On the other hand, the volume of trade between Ukraine and Turkey has regularly increased over the last three years, which indicates the end of the crisis. In 2017, trade turnover increased by 20%. The signing of the FTA agreement will be a very important step in bilateral economic relations. Our goal is to have this agreement for at least 30 years, he added.
Mr. Kubiv said that Ukraine has good opportunities for Turkish companies in different areas such as infrastructure, energy, mechanical engineering, information technology, “Green Energy”. We are expecting the meeting of the two presidents of our countries in the near future, which may lead to new reforms.
Deputy Minister of Trade of Turkey Gonca Yilmaz Batur stressed that bilateral trade between Turkey and Ukraine is increasing from year to year: “We hosted about 380 thousand tourists from Ukraine in the first five months of 2018. Now we have added a new dimension to our bilateral commercial relations with state and private sectors – joint investment. We focus on concrete results in such areas as transport and health. At the end of November we will organize such a joint Forum with a seminar in Ukraine. Our goal is to increase the trade turnover between Ukraine and Turkey to USD 10 billion by 2023, “he said.
Rasim Bekmezci – Head of the Turkish-Ukrainian Business Council DEIK stressed that having a trade turnover between Ukraine and Turkey of USD 8 billion in 2008 and USD 4 billion in 2017, we are obliged to continue to make joint efforts to achieve $ 10 billion.
Mr. Bekmezci noted that the FTA will contribute to the growth of the economy, investment and trade of both countries. He created this “Platform for Dialogue” to discuss and solve problems that may arise.
